Kyriaki Machera, MSc, PhD, ERT (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Toxicology, University of Lund Sweden and School of Health Sciences, University of Athens, Greece, 1990), has more than 25 years of experience in pesticide evaluation as permanent Research Scientist, Head of the Laboratory of Pesticides’ Toxicology (since 1990) and Head of the Department of Pesticides’ Control and Phytopharmacy (since 2005) at Benaki Phytopathological Institute.
Her scientific activities involve both research and regulatory toxicology and ecotoxicology with focus on hazard identification and risk assessment of plant protection and biocidal products, as well as identification of the toxicological profile of bioactive natural compounds. She has coordinated and participated in a number of co-funded projects by the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority and other sources.
She has participated as a member of the Greek delegation in a number of European Community Co-Ordination (ECCO) Expert group meetings on pesticides toxicology and risk assessment. She has also been active as an independent expert in the EFSA Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues (PPR) and the working groups set by the Panel to develop draft scientific opinions on specific issues. Dr Machera has published more than 100 scientific papers and presentations in national and international conferences. She was the scientific coordinator and author of training material for the Greek farmers for the implementation of Directive 2009/128/EC. .
Dr Machera is currently the Director General of Benaki Phytopathological Institute (since 2010) and a member of the EFSA PPR Panel (2015-2018).
